First 4K Live-Stream From Space!

Astronauts, Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer, at the International Space Station (ISS) produced the first 4K ultra high definition live stream broadcast on April 26, 2017. This amazing event happened at 10:30 AM PDT (1:30 PM EDT) and was featured at a special show at the 2017 National Association of Broadcasters in Los Vegas. It demonstrated the advanced technology and promoted space science and filmmaking. Even though the broadcast was relevantly short lasting a couple minutes, the two astronauts impressed the crowd with some fun experiments that looked wonderful, thanks to the high-resulting imaging.
The first experiment involved a Ping-Pong game between the two scientists.  With zero gravity on the ISS, the two astronauts did not use an ordinary ball. Instead Fischer used a small ball of water he created by pushing the liquid through a straw. With the zero gravity environment, the bubble stayed intact almost the entire time. The duo had a fun time playing with their makeshift paddles. Since errant water bubbles can damage the space stations sensitive instruments, Fischer swallowed after the game was done.
The second experiment also involved a ball of water, but instead of bouncing it back and fourth with each other, they added some Alka-Seltzer. The ensuing air bubbles were very clearly seen by the audience even though the ISS rotates 220 miles above earth! Red food colouring was injected into the bubble to make it seem even more vivid and life like. Fischer tried to catch the bubble in his mouth again, but it evaded him and he was later seen cleaning the red mess up with a sheepish smile on his face.
For their third and final demonstration, the scientists created a thin sheet of water over a ring similar to the ones used to blow bubbles, and added blue and green food colouring. To top it off Fischer carefully injected additional water to make an Earth like bubble that magically floated inside the ring.
The astronauts said that the 4K live-stream capabilities allow them to share detailed images of space experiments with their colleagues on Earth. Whitson thinks that the tech will become more and more crucial as we get closer and closer to Mars because obtaining high quality images of the Red Planet will enable researchers to study and prepare for the destination in advance.
Though this is the first time anyone has ever live-streamed from space using 4K tech, it is not the first time any one has used 4K tech on the ISS. In October of 2015, American astronaut Scott Kelly released a similar 4K ultra-high-definition demonstration with similar bubble experiments. This was captured on film using the ISS’s then newly acquired 4K video camera.

Thinker question: If you were Fischer or Peggy what would you do at the space station and why?

  1. This is a very hard thinker question, because there's so many things I would love to do in space! Sadly, I have to cut them down to one.
One thing I would love to do, is go swimming in a giant bubble of water the size of a hot tub! That way, you could swim in the bubble, while it floats to the ceiling!!! It's like way that you can swim anywhere in the station, but stay in the same water! Sorry I keep on putting exclamaition marks everywhere but I can't help it! Time to answer WHY I chose this answer.
I chose swimming in a bubble because I love to swim, and I love the idea of having no gravity! Just floating around, literally flying....I would love to be in anti gravity!!!!

    3. That would be fun to swim in a bubble of water, but how would you get out of the bubble. You could drown!

    4. That would be very fun. Especially because the ball would bounce off the ground and onto the roof and then back on the ground.

  2. Great question Jacob!

I would like to play soccer or basket ball in space! I would like to do this because the ball would float so it would be hard but really really fun!!!!

    1. I would like to play air hockey with a flat disc of water because it would be challenging when the puck keeps floating to away.

  3. I would like to play head on tackle football with a ball that soaks you if you get tackled. If somebody( I just strangely remembered that now you are just somebody that I used to know song) tries to tackle you you could just A: to throw the ball down and pop it B: throw it at the persons face and get the water all over them. I would choose B (I don't think that any of you are really that surprised) Great presentation Jacob I really liked it.

    1. Hahahaha. That was very funny. I liked how you would get soaked if you got tackled.

  4. If I was Fischer or Peggy I would play hockey and baseball because they are my two favourite sports. The puck wouldn’t stay on the ground. It would go slowly and it would be more challenging to hit the puck. Also, you could jump and make contact with the puck in the air. The only downside is that it would be a one-on-one game, but it would be kind of like a game of air hockey. For baseball, you can dive in the air like Kevin Pillar, but you don’t come down like Kevin Pillar. When you hit the ball, it would keep on floating in the spaceship. I wish I could go to space and play these sports!

  6. If I were Fischer or Peggy I would play ping-pong with an edible water bottle shaped as a sphere. When it would be hit by a paddle, it would bounce back to the other person. I would also colour the water bottle sphere as many colours as I could so I could see how they mix. If the ball is not transparent, it would be easier to see when using it as a ping-pong ball rather than using a transparent one.

    1. I like darts to! It would be really fun to play with zero gravity.

  8. If i were Peggy or Fisher i would play sword fighting with my friends in the spaceship. I think it would be fun because you can fly around with your sword and fight each other without gravity. I would bring my favourite friends Ben and Finn.

    1. I think it would be fun to jump around. It would be fun because you would jump really high.

  9. I would play basketball in space to see if it is easier to play basketball or harder because there is no gravity. Your blog was very interesting because of the water bubble and how they put colours in it. YOUR BLOG WAS AWSOME, I like your blog is that how you explained everything. It's really cool how the astronauts Peggy and Jack choose ping-pong for an experiment.

    1. I think it would be harder to play basketball in space because when you dribble you would slowly float upwards.

  10. If I were Peggy or Fisher a few of the experiments I would do is I would put yeast, water and flour in the bubble put in a room about room temperature and see if it puffs up like bread does. It is really cool that when Peggy and Fisher injected food colouring and the Alka-seltzer and how it floated. Good Job with your Current Events Blog Jacob!

    2. I think art would be cool to watch the yeast puff up, but I think it would need to be warmer than room temperature.

  12. If I was Fischer or Peggy I would take one of those floating balls of water and mix all of the different colours of food colouring into it because I want to know how water just starts to float and forms into a ball.

    1. I think ithe water just comes out like a bad and doesn't "form" into a ball.

  13. If I was Fischer or Peggy I think I would play the new Nintendo Switch in space because you could be playing Mario Cart in space, and then by accident drop it would just start floating. Do you think that would be awesome?!

  14. That is a really hard question, because there are so many answers in my head! If I was Fischer or Peggy at the space station, one of the things I would try playing is soccer. I would try playing it with a jiggly bubble of water!! It would be so so so so so so fun to do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One of the other things I would try is watching a movie. It would be so awesome if your T.V was floating while you were watching a movie!!!!!!!!
This was a really cool blog, Jacob! Good job.

I would write a story in space. I think this would be really hard because everything would float.

  17. If I was Peggy or Jack and I was in space, and I could do anything, I would play tag, or play hide and seek, because you will be floating in the air when you play tag, and if I played hide and seek I could hide behind the rocks in space.

    1. That would be cool. I think it would also be hatred to play hide and go seek because you float away from the rock (unless it had something you could firmly grip to).

  18. I would like to play hockey to see if it is harder or easier. It would be lots of fun

    1. I think it would be harder, also since there is no gravity I think skates would NOT be required.

  19. If I was Jack or Peggy, I would do the same thing to get the bubble but instead of it being water. I would replace it with coke, and then I would shake it up. It would be so cool if it exploded. First, It would break in to a bust of coke that you could see it and then it would go in to three bubbles.

    1. That would be very cool to watch it burst.

  20. If I were to do something in space I would try to cook something. I would also try to make a bubble of coke and shook the bottle.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I think that would be very cool to watch, but the coke bottle wouldn't explode because there is no gravity so there is no pressure that is forcing it to explode (english translation sciencey talk for " the bottle will not explode").

  21. If I were in space I would play air hockey, 0 gravity. The puck would be a disc of water while the 'sticks' would be heavy lead squares, with handles, kind of like curling rings. The puck would be attached to a string so it could not float off the table which would be chained to the ground as well. This is truly 'air hockey'.
